Sir,
In reply to your letter of the 20th ultimo, respecting land required by the Military Authorities at West Point Battery, I am directed to inform you that this Government, while accepting your correction in the area, cannot reduce the price of 10 cents per square foot. The value of land in the West End of the Colony has increased enormously in the last year, and land only 300 yds: distant in a straight line below the land now spoken of sold lately for $6 per sq:foot. In view of this fact I cannot agree with your opinion that the price named is unreasonably high.
I have &c
(Sgd:) J.H.Stewart Lockhart, Colonial Secretary.
